For those wanting to open a restaurant, or maybe for someone with years of experience, the state offers a refresher course to ensure food handlers understand the importance of “food safety.”

K-State Research and Extension Seward County will host a Servsafe Starters Food Safety Short Course via an interactive TV system from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Southwest Medical Center.

The Servsafe course is not required by law. However, the Kansas food code says that “the person in charge must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of food safety practices.”

This class can help to ensure that when the food inspector comes, those food handlers – at the restaurant, convenience store, an event concession stand or other event where food is sold to the public – will be better able to demonstrate their food safety knowledge.

The class will originate from St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City with Finney County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Linda Beech as the instructor. Registration is requested by Wednesday to the Seward County Extension office at 1081 Stadium Road in Liberal.
