GUYMON, Okla. – Mae Hiller, 94, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Dunaway Manor.
She was born May 20, 1915, to S.M. and Alice (Bridges) Calhoun in Beaver County, Okla., near Floris, nine miles west of Forgan, Okla.
She married Lauren Hiller June 21, 1948 in Clayton, N.M. He preceded her in death.
The first school that she attended was a one-room schoolhouse about one mile from the farm. A few years later, she began attending Greenough Consolidated School, where she finished the 8th grade. She graduated from high school in this district in 1933 with high honors. She was active in sports and was an accomplished pianist who played for all school activities.
She worked wherever there was work for her in the Floris/Forgan area until she left home in 1942. She left for Denver to work for the war effort, and later worked in nursing, including working as a nursing assistant in the Liberal hospital.
Through their generous support to children and youth, the couple have blessed many lives worldwide, namely the Colorado Boys Ranch, College of the Ozarks, Christ for the Nations and American Center for Law and Justice. In 2004, they were presented with a Distinguished Service Award and in 2008 the administration building was named “The Lauren and Mae Hiller Welcome Center,” now called the CBR Youth Connect..
She is survived by her nephews and their families, Gene Calhoun, McAllen, Texas, Everett Finney, Sebring, Fla.; Val Finney, Ottawa, Kan., Kenneth Hiller, Guymon, Okla., Aaron Hiller, Paris, Texas, and Larry Anderson of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.
o Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Henson-Novak Funeral Chapel at 501 NW Fifth in Guymon with the Rev. Pat Hoban presiding.
Burial will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery.
