Seward County Emergency Management Services and the National Weather Service have issued a freezing fog advisory tonight followed by a significant winter storm that is shaping up to impact Southwest Kansas this weekend.

Plan now for difficult travel conditions, and make sure that needed things are in place before Sunday evening.

Prepare homes, pets and livestock for cold temperatures, combined with snow and 30 to 40 mph winds. Travel will likely be difficult or impossible for passenger vehicles by late Sunday into Monday.

The freezing fog advisory is in effect today with areas of freezing fog and freezing drizzle possible as the moisture begins to return to the area today. By early Sunday, this freezing precipitation will change over to all snow, with steadier  and heavier snowfall likely by Sunday night.

In addition, north winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts exceeding 40 mph by late Sunday night, resulting in blowing and drifting snow.

Widespread snow will continue through the day Monday.

Snowfall amounts are expected to average between 6 and 8 inches, according to the advisory.
