The cause of the Jan. 4 fire that totalled the Rent-A-Center in the Coronado Plaza and affected adjoining businesses due to smoke and water damage has yet to be determined.

“Investigators from the Liberal Fire Department, Liberal Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) are working together to determine a cause for the fire,” according to a statement released Friday afternoon by LFD Deputy Chief of Operations Skeety Poulton.

“All the agencies continue to gather information. However, due to this being such a large incident, the official cause has yet to be determined,” Poulton continued. “A press release will be issued once an official cause has been determined.

“Thank you for your patience,” he added.
